"Matters of Light and Depth" Questions and Comments

Questions:
  1. In what instances would you want to use glare in a photo?
    1. What exactly is “gentle glare?”
  2. If you’re only going to need to use more soft light the more hard light you use, what’s the point of using more hard light in the first place?
  3. How do you take clear pictures at night? Is it possible to take them without flash, or are there settings to use that can soften the strength of the flash?

Comments:

  1. When trying to get rid of glare, it would probably be most helpful to move the angle of the camera or the shadow hitting the object. Might be a good idea to position myself and a higher stand-point to achieve this angle.
  2. Having the planes feel “happy” seems like too subjective a term… isn’t there any better way to determine when to stop adding light? I guess it’s all a matter of personal preference and what aesthetic you’re trying to achieve in the photo.
  3. Use hard light for more dramatic emphasis of objects to get a strong outline of the shape/contour line. Portraits might be better with soft light (think of example photo from class).
